What are the minimum requirements for the Demon Voice over Broadband Phone Service?
The Demon Voice over Broadband Phone Service requires a functional and reliable broadband Internet connection. Ethernet Broadband Phones require a spare Ethernet connection and wireless broadband phones require a home or business wireless network. For access to the Demon Voice over Broadband Control Panel, you will require Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later; or Netscape.

What cabling is required?
Most broadband phones use a standard Ethernet connection, which is the same as a LAN connection on a PC. The broadband phone will be plugged into your local computer network exactly the same as a normal computer. The exception to this is the wireless broadband phone, which doesn't use any cables but uses the wireless hub instead. Some routers are able to prioritize voice traffic which will improve the performance of your voice service.

What hardware is supported with this product?
We will provide support for all Voice over Broadband hardware purchased from ourselves and will give general advice for all unsupported hardware.

Will the broadband phone service work over a wireless network?
Yes, as long as the wireless broadband connection is reliable and has enough available bandwidth to serve the number of broadband phones you intend to use.

Do I need a distributor (switch)?
No.

If I move premises can I still use the Demon Voice over Broadband Phone Service?
Providing the new premises are equipped with broadband, the service can still be used. If you move premises, please inform us of your change of address.

Is extension dialling available on the Demon Voice over Broadband Service?
Yes, the extension number for each broadband phone is the last six digits of the telephone number - for instance: if your broadband phone number is 0845 009 1234 then your extension number is 091234. You use the extension number to dial other Demon Voice over Broadband phones free of charge.

Can the 0845 numbers supplied be dialled from European countries?
The 0845 numbers can be dialled from some European counties, but relies on external phone companies. Should there be a problem dialling the number from a particular country an international geographic dial number is available (01189 143644) which allows users to dial the number and then your phone extension to be connected. E.g. you should give our international number as 0118 914 3644 ext: 092233 (assuming your broadband phone number was 0845 0092233).

How much bandwidth does a VoIP phone use?
Broadband phones use codec, a compression technique, which means the calls are very small in comparison with a traditional telephone call. We currently use the codec G.729 that uses approximately 20kbs per call (64kbs for a traditional call) and provides good voice quality.

What happens if my broadband connection is down?
Messages will be taken, emailed to you and placed on the Demon Voice over Broadband control panel. Messages can be obtained by utilising pin codes similar to mobile phones message retrieval.

If a WiFi phone is used in a HOT SPOT, how will the calls be billed?
Calls will be billed in the normal manner. Essentially you are using Internet bandwidth at the hotspot so the phone will be billed from any location. You will also have to pay the hotspot service provider for the Internet usage, the same as you would with a laptop.

Will all Broadband Phones be useable in HOT SPOTS?
No, only wireless broadband phones that are wi-fi compatible, which allow you to use the service without registering or those which are capable to let you register with the hotspot service provider.

If I have Wireless Broadband at each of my offices can I move my SIP phones between offices?
Yes, provided the broadband phones IP addresses are configured to operate at all sites.

Which codecs voice compressions do you support on the VoIP Service?
We support the following list of voice codecs:

If I already have a 2-port SIP adapter (e.g. Cisco ATA) can I use your service?
Yes, in effect you will register for 2 broadband phone accounts because you have a 2-line adapter - i.e: 1 phone account for each line. If you are a new customer, register for a single account on the web site or from the cd-rom. Once you have your first account set up, you will have access to our Demon Voice over Broadband control panel (username and password is e-mailed to you). From this, you can set-up additional broadband phone accounts for the second line on your Cisco ATA. When this is completed, you will have two separate 0845 numbers pointing to your Cisco. You should then configure your Cisco to use both SIP usernames and passwords supplied by us.

Can I set up an Asterisk box to use the Demon Voice over Broadband system?
Yes, but please note that we will not be able to support the set up and configuration of the Asterisk box.
